Der Utröper

The Utröper (Low German for town crier) used to be the living newspaper in Otterndorf.

 A statue in the town center still commemorates him today. He read out news and decisions from the town authorities, announced decrees and town meetings as well as news of daily business and could be booked by local tradesmen to advertise goods. He also read out joyful private announcements such as weddings and births.

We revive this beautiful tradition for you almost every Friday (June to August). At 11:00 a.m. the bell sounds - then it's time for the Otterndorfer Utröper on the church square and the weekly market resounds: "Announcement, announcement! Lüd komt ran, komt nöger, bi mi kriegt ji dat Neeste to hörn, wat erst in annerthalf Weeken in't Blatt steiht!"
