Not far from the city center, on the grounds of the former fortification—known as the Bleicher Ravelin—which was built by the Swedish government, lies one of Germany’s oldest open-air museums that is free to the public.

As early as 1910, the “Association for History and Antiquities” began building an open-air museum on the site. Half-timbered houses from the region, a post mill, and a 17th-century capstan, together with an Altländer ceremonial gate, a stone oven, a wagon shed, and various agricultural tools, make up the museum complex. In the so-called “Altländer Haus,” visitors can still marvel at the original furnishings spanning two centuries.
