Festung Grauerort I Festungsbahn

The complex, now a designated historic site, is a typical example of Prussian fortress architecture. In addition to guided tours, various events such as flea markets, concerts, and exhibitions are held there. The fortress is also a popular destination for geocachers. Stade-Abbenfleth is home to the impressive Grauerort Artillery Fort, which was built by Prussia between 1869 and 1879 to protect against enemy ships on the Elbe River. In addition to guided tours, various events—such as concerts and exhibitions—are held here, and dedicated narrow-gauge railway enthusiasts have also built a small narrow-gauge railway line on the site. It pays homage to the narrow-gauge railways once used here for military purposes. Today, on special operating days, anyone can ride along and take a seat on old, converted ammunition cars. The approximately 1,000-meter-long route offers extremely scenic views and runs from the locomotive shed to the Elbe River and back.
