The foundation walls of the historic Manninga Castle in Pewsum date back to 1458. The castle was once the seat of the Manninga chieftain family. Haiko Manninga sold his castle in 1565 to Count Edzard II. Cirksena. Under the ownership of the Cirksenas, the castle was extended to include a large moated castle, which unfortunately has not been preserved. The castle was converted into a stone house in the Dutch style.
After 1800, no significant changes were made to the building.
Today, you can still admire the old stone house with a small courtyard, a wide moat and the gatehouse.
The castle houses a museum on East Frisian chieftaincy and castle history inside and is therefore open to the public.
The wedding room in Manningaburg Castle offers couples the opportunity to get married.
