History
In the Middle Ages, the village of Banter Kirchspiel was located near today's Banter See. When the ports of Wilhelmshaven were built, the western port and intermediate port were created here, which was divided by the Grodendamm in 1948, with the western part being closed off with the former western port and today forming Lake Banter.
In 2012, the approx. 7.5 km long "Banter Lake Circular Trail", which had been planned since the 1970s and had already been realized in sections, was completed by the city of Wilhelmshaven.
Lake Banter today
The brackish water lake is used as fishing water by the Wilhelmshaven Sport Fishing Association.
On the north side of Lake Banter is a colony of common terns, which has been studied intensively by the Institute for Bird Research "Vogelwarte Helgoland" since the 1980s.
