Kirche St. Wilhadi

Upon entering the church, one is struck by the massive columns supporting the high ribbed vault; the path leads past them toward the altar. When the sun shines through the stained-glass windows, the interior, with its Baroque decor, is bathed in light. The window behind the altar, which was reopened as part of the exterior restoration, lets in even more light. A stained-glass panel has been placed in front of the simple window, echoing the blue and yellow tones of the other windows.

The three-nave Gothic hall church, the largest in the Archdiocese of Bremen, dates from the first half of the 14th century and was built on the site of a previous structure that likely dates back to the 11th century. Only the west tower actually dates back to the 13th century. During the city fire of 1659, the interior of the church was also destroyed and subsequently refurbished.

The tower was given a tall spire, which was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1724 and replaced with a flat hipped roof. Notable features of the interior include the altar and pulpit from 1660, chandeliers from the 16th and 17th centuries, and a number of epitaphs.

The interior of the church was extensively restored in 1958–60 and 1991. During this work, part of the old ceiling paintings was restored.
