St. Cosmae et Damiani-Kirche in Stade

Church

The octagonal church tower is the landmark of the Hanseatic city of Stade, visible from afar.

After the city fire of 1659, the church was fitted with new furnishings made in Hamburg and the impressive spire. Surviving from the period before the fire are the St. Gertrude Altar (from St. Nicolai Church, which was demolished in 1834), a relief depicting the Crucifixion, and a chandelier. The main altar, dating from 1677, was created by Christian Brecht.

Since 2013, visitors have been able to climb the 186 steps to the tower lantern and enjoy a panoramic view over the rooftops of Stade. You can find dates for the tower tours here. In the spring and during Advent, visitors can treat their ears to the sound of the famous Hus/Schnitger organ as it is played during public organ tours in the church. The Baroque organ is still considered one of the most significant organ works of the 17th century and established Schnitger’s reputation as one of the most famous organ builders in Northern Europe.
