The former Franciscan monastery is located in the center of the Hanseatic city of Stade, between St. Cosmae Church and St. Wilhardi Church. During the Reformation, Stade became Protestant and the monastery was dissolved; it then served as a poorhouse for a long time. Its current U-shape was formed after the great city fire of 1659, which destroyed large parts of the old town. Today, the two-story half-timbered building houses numerous social and cultural institutions.
