Get a taste of the North Sea: A tour of Europe by bike? The North Sea Coast Cycle Route makes it possible. The tour leads through eight countries with 6,000 km of signposted route:

The North Sea Coast Cycle Path in the Altes Land vacation region on the Elbe

From the Hamburg-Finkenwerder ferry terminal, you cycle through the Altes Land, the largest closed fruit-growing region in Northern Europe. The blossoming apple trees and idyllic villages such as Jork and Steinkirchen accompany you along the way. The picturesque old Hanseatic town of Stade on the border with the Marsch invites you to take a leisurely stroll. The route continues across the Geest landscape to the Christmas village of Himmelpforten and Großenwörden on the Oste, which you cross using the floating ferry. Via Hemmoor and the wooded Wingst, the route leads to Otterndorf and then along the Elbe to Cuxhaven.

You can change banks between Stade and Hamburg on several ferries, making it possible to take beautiful day trips on both sides of the Elbe, for example. And if your bike needs a break, use the Elbe-Radwanderbus and cover parts of the route on a motorized bike.

Safety guidelines

Between the Lühe jetty and Bassenfleth, the path runs along so-called driftwood clearing paths. These are part of the dyke system and are primarily used for flood protection. Depending on the wind direction and water level, loose sand and/or flotsam of all kinds washed up during high tides must always be expected here.
