After wooden predecessor churches, the granite church was built on a high terp in 1246. The west gable was clad in brick at the end of the 19th century. The originally vaulted interior is now adorned with a flat beamed ceiling painted in the style of the 17th century.
The valuable furnishings include the baptismal font made of blue granite, Namur type, from the 13th century, a two-storey richly decorated winged altar from 1661 and a pulpit from 1649, both by Jacob Cröpelin.
The late Gothic wall painting in the apse shows Mary and John under the triumphant Christ. A sacrament house is inserted into the side of the apse arch. The windows are framed by lavish scrollwork.
The organ with playable back positive was built in the Jever workshop of Joachim Kayser in 1697. An epitaph by Heddo von Waddewarden from 1603 and tombstones from 1570 and 1575, also outside on the western slope of the Warf, bear witness to the eventful history of the place.
